HOUSING AT THE SHELTER: - The Womens' Shelter currently has 9 Apartments. - 3 are for single women and house 6 ladies in each room. - There are 6 apartments for families
Friendship is striving to ensure that this facility is not considered a hand out program but a hand up facility to assist the women with repairing past mistakes to insure independent living within a year. Friendship has partnered with multiple agencies to insure this success. At this time there are women attending GED classes, college courses and working part time to better themselves and their families.
There are others attending intense substance abuse counseling to assist them with their addictions. One thing that Friendship Mission would like for our community to know is that 70% of our single residents are senior citizens that were experiencing homelessness. The majority of these ladies are receiving SSI which totals $710.00 per month and the list for housing assistance is a three year wait so as you can see there was no way for these ladies to afford rent, utilities, groceries, medicine etc. Friendship is very pleased to be able to assist this population.
Friendship Mission North has been blessed with many people in the community bringing in so many donations that the entire shelter was furnished without a dime spent. This was an unbelievable blessing due to the fact that there was over $100,000.00 spent in repairing the facility.
There are eleven apartments in the shelter and all of these have been adopted by churches, businesses or individual group. This not only assists the residents with items needed but allows the community to become involved with the residents heeling and life repairs.
